Do It Yourself: Tips for Selling Your Car

FooteWork
Thinking of selling your car privately?  According to Kelley Blue Book, "Selling a car on your own can seem complicated, troublesome and even, sometimes, scary. As a result, most people choose to trade in their cars to a dealer rather than sell privately, thus taking a hit on the transaction price. But private-party sales don't have to be difficult, and will often result in higher transaction prices than trade-ins." The editors at KBB put together 10 steps that zero in on exactly what you need to know with helpful links to determine a price.

1.  Fully assess your car's condition.
"It's important to know the condition of your car before setting a sale price. Kelley Blue Book offers a Condition Quiz that can assist you and can be accessed from within the Private Party Value section of our web site. After assessing your car's condition, you'll feel more confident deciding on an acceptable, and reasonable, price. The Kelley Blue Book Private Party Value can be used when setting your price but, remember, only you know the condition of your car and only you can best judge if any flaws might warrant a price cut. It's also very important to be brutally honest with yourself about your car's condition. Generally, sellers tend to over-rate their cars' conditions, and buyers tend to be fairly good at spotting problems. Therefore, if you over-rate it, and thus over-price it, you'll only prolong the time it takes to make a sale. Remember, the idea is to sell the car and, even if you accept a lower price than you might like, it will still likely be more than you would have made on a trade-in.

Do not decide that you "need" to get a certain amount for the car if that amount you "need" is more than the reasonable market value. That will just mean you'll never sell it. The buyer doesn't care how much you need. Remember; your car is in the market, competing with every other car in the market, and it is the market, and the market alone, that determines a fair and reasonable price.

You may also want to do some homework before showing the car to a potential buyer. If you were a dealer, you would give the vehicle a certain amount of preparation before putting it on the lot for sale, and you would do this preparation in order to get a better price. The same principle applies when selling your car to a private party. You may not want to spend a lot of money on your car just to sell it, but you do want it to look presentable and, just as important, you want to avoid unpleasant surprises while showing it to potential buyers.

2. Pretend to be the Buyer
Before you show your car to a buyer, look at it as if you were interested in buying it for yourself. Look for scratches and dings. Are the tires in decent condition, do they all match and are they wearing evenly all of the way across the treads? Start the car and operate all the knobs, switches and controls. Does everything work? How about the lights, the turn signals, the wipers, the sound system, the power windows? Does the air conditioning and heating system work in all modes and blow hot and cold air? Try everything. Many people, for example, don't know if their cars' rear windows work because they've never used them, and don't know if the brake lights work because they never see them. If something doesn't work properly, either fix it or accept the reality that it will reduce your price."

Get the Best MPG Possible with What You Drive Now!

Who wouldn't love to get one of the latest efficient cars to save money at the pump but that is not an option for most people.  Instead, there are some great ways to get the best millage possible with the car you drive now. Consumer Reports did a thorough report on fuel economy using a fuel meter and came up with valuable tips to improve your MPG as well as debunking some commonly thought myths about gas consumption.  According to CR, "Tests with a Toyota Camry and other vehicles show there are ways to minimize what you spend at the pump with your current car.

Drive at a moderate speed

This is the biggest factor. You may have to be a little patient, but driving at 55 mph instead of 65 or 75 will save you money. When we increased the Camry's highway cruising speed from 55 mph to 65, the car's fuel economy dropped from 40 mpg to 35. Speeding up to 75 mph cost the car another 5 mpg. One reason is that aerodynamic drag increases exponentially the faster you drive; it simply takes more fuel to power the car through the air.

Drive smoothly

Avoid hard acceleration and braking whenever possible. In our tests, frequent bursts of acceleration and braking reduced the Camry's mileage by 2 to 3 mpg. Once up to speed on the highway, maintain a steady pace in top gear. Smooth acceleration, cornering, and braking also extend the life of the engine, transmission, brakes, and tires.

Reduce unnecessary drag

At highway speeds, more than 50 percent of engine power goes to overcoming aerodynamic drag. So don't carry things on top of your vehicle when you don't have to. Installing a large Thule Cascade 1700 car-top carrier on our Camry dropped its gas mileage from 35 mpg to 29 at 65 mph. Even driving with empty racks on the car reduces its fuel economy.

Don't use premium fuel if you don't have to

If your car specifies regular fuel, don't buy premium under the mistaken belief that your engine will run better. The only difference you'll see is about 20 cents more per gallon. Most cars are designed to run just fine on regular gasoline. Even many cars for which premium is recommended will run well on regular. We have found that the differences are imperceptible during normal driving. Check your owner's manual to find out if your engine really requires premium or if you can run on other grades.

Minimize driving with a cold engine

Engines run most efficiently when they're warm. In our city-driving tests, making multiple short trips and starting the engine from cold each time reduced fuel economy by almost 4 mpg. Engines also produce more pollution and wear faster when they're cold. When possible, combine several short trips into one so that the engine stays warm.

Keep tires properly inflated

The Camry experienced a 1.3 mpg loss in highway fuel economy when the tires were underinflated by 10 psi. More important, underinflated tires compromise handling and braking, and wear faster. And they run much hotter, which can lead to tire failure. Check the pressure of your vehicle's tires at least once a month with a tire gauge. The owner's manual explains how to do it.

Buy tires with lower rolling resistance

A tire's rolling resistance can add or detract another 1 or 2 mpg. In our tire ratings, look for high-rated tires with low rolling resistance. They generally won't cost more, and replacing a worn tire could save you more than $100 a year in fuel.

Avoid idling for long periods

Think of it this way: When you're idling, your car is getting zero miles per gallon. When we let a Buick Lucerne, with a V8, idle for 10 minutes while warming up, it burned about an eighth of a gallon of gas. A smaller engine would probably burn less, but idling still adds up over time. As a rule, turn off your engine if you expect to sit for more than about 30 seconds. An engine warms up faster as it's driven anyway."

Prescott Valley Balloon Festival is This Weekend: What Do You Know About Hot Air Balloons?

FooteWork is proud to be a sponsor of the Prescott Valley Annual Balloon Festival happening this weekend, June 16th and 17th.  If you are looking for something fun to do this Saturday and Sunday, this is it!  A great way to celebrate Father's Day too!

Did you know that hot air ballons and the pilots who fly them are regulated by the FAA just like other aircraft?  Do you know what 'glow' refers to?  Here are some interesting facts about hot air balloons from the Prescott Valley Balloon Festival website:

When do hot air balloons fly? Hot air balloons generally fly during the morning and late afternoon. Balloons rely on air currents for speed and direction and require stable (calm to 7 knots in a predictable direction) to maintain safe operations. The Phoenix area usually has 300 days of good weather for flying.

Where do hot air balloons fly? Hot air balloons can fly practically anywhere. Balloons are registered aircraft and are under the authority of the FAA, who also owns the airspace above buildings and events.

How tall and wide are hot air balloons? Standard shape balloons are approximately 85 feet tall and 65 feet wide.

What are hot air balloons made from? The fabric part of the balloon, called the envelope, is constructed of coated rip-stop nylon, similar to the material that parachutes are made from. The basket is constructed of primarily of wicker. Wicker is light, strong, and resilient to incidental damage.

What type of fuel is used? Liquid propane is used to heat the inside of the balloon.

How long have balloons been around? Hot air balloons are the oldest type of flying, having been invented in France in 1782. Not until the late 1960s did the new era of ballooning arise with the new materials and designs.

Are balloons regulated? Hot air balloons are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), just like airplanes. Like other aircraft, balloons require yearly safety inspections by an FAA authorized repair station.

Are balloon pilots regulated? Balloon pilots are licensed and regulated by the FAA.

What is a balloon glow? Heating the air inside the balloon with propane-fueled fire causes the balloon to glow brightly. During a daytime flight, this effect is usually not seen, but during evening glows, the effect is stunning.

What is a balloon tether? A tether is when the balloon does not fly freely, but is tied to the ground with a number of 100 to 150-foot ropes. While being tied off, the balloon can take passengers up into the air without flying away from the designated spot.

Among the many events, there is 'Balloon Glow' Saturday night and helicopter rides both Saturday and Sunday given by Guidance Aviation. There will also be a car show, carnival, beer garden, and arts & crafts. Go to the Prescott Valley Balloon Festival website for a schedule and map of the events. Hope you can join us for the 2012 Prescott Valley Balloon Festival!  It will be uplifting!

Get Ready For Summer: Vehicle Safety and Maintenance Check List

Summer is almost here!  It's a good time to do some routine checks of your vehicle before taking a trip and it's easy to do it yourself. About.com's Auto Repair section has some very useful how-to links:
Radiator Flush: The coolant in your radiator doesn't last forever. Over time it can break down and start to corrode the inside of your radiator. This can lead to cooling problems and radiator repair. A radiator flush once a year is cheap insurance against radiator repairs.
Replace Your Air Filter: You should replace your air filter twice a year, so now's a good time to get that 5-minute job out of the way.
Tire Checks: Summer traveling could mean driving in the rain. The tread on your tires must be adequate for rainy weather or you could end up in a ditch, or worse. Checking the tread depth on your tires take one minute. While you're at it, you should check your tire pressure, too.
Replace Your Windshield Wipers: Winter weather can be brutal to your windshield wipers, making them almost useless if you get caught in a summer rain shower. Replace them at the beginning of the summer and you won't have to worry.
Inspect Your Brakes: It's a good idea to inspect your brakes twice a year just to be sure everything is up to snuff. Car safety should always be a top priority. Go ahead and check your brake fluid while you're at it.
Check Your Battery: Corrosion is very likely to build up during winter weather driving. Check your battery posts and cables to ensure you'll have no starting problems.
Check Your Headlights: Sometimes you don't notice that you have a bulb out. Now's a good time to take a look to see if you need to replace a headlight bulb. Not only is it unsafe to drive with one headlight, you can get a ticket!
Also important is checking your oil every 3000 to 5000 miles. Keeping the oil from getting too low preserves the life of your engine. Checking the fuel filter is also recommended but might be better done by professionals.  Changing a clogged fuel filter can increase your vehicle's fuel economy and performance which is wise before heading out on a long road trip!
It's essential to bring lots of water when traveling, especially when driving through the desert. Also, it's a good idea to travel with an roadside emergency kit.  Check out this checklist from Consumer Reports:
We hope you have a safe and fun Summer!  Come see us at one of our FooteWork offices, located in Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Williams, Arizona for any of your auto, RV, motocycle, OHV, boat, or aircraft title and registration needs.  We also do Level 1 Inspections to check vehicle ownership both on and off site and abandoned vehicle, towing and salvage yard inspections as well as many more motor vehicle services.
Happy Summer!

Arizona's Centennial Plate Wins Best License Plate In US!

Arizona's beautiful Centennial License Plate celebrating the 100th year anniversary of Arizona's Statehood was awarded first place in the United States by The Automobile License Plate Collectors Association.

“I am pleased to announce that the Great State of Arizona is this year’s recipient of ALPCA’s Best Plate Award,” said ALPCA President Greg Gibson. ALPCA members worldwide were asked to vote based on two judging criteria: the overall attractiveness of the license plate design and its legibility as a tool for public safety and law enforcement. “Congratulations to the residents of the Grand Canyon State, Governor Jan Brewer and to the license plate design team in Phoenix,” stated Gibson. ALPCA’s Best Plate Award Coordinator Gus Oliver said “Many of the members commented about the combination of boldness and simplicity of this plate. I knew it had an excellent chance of winning the moment I first saw it.”

Aviators: FAA Accepting Only Electronic Medical Certificates After October 1, 2012

Cessna Mustang
If your FAA medical certificate is coming up for renewal or you are in the process of becoming a pilot, the FAA just announced that as of October 1, 2012,  it will no longer accept paper applications and everyone will be required to complete the application online.

According to the Federal Register public announcement on March 8, 2012, "The Federal Aviation Administration is providing public notice regarding its intent to discontinue use of the paper version of FAA Form 8500-8, the application form used to apply for FAA medical certification. Maintaining FAA Form 8500-8 for applicants to complete manually is burdensome not only in terms of the cost involved, but also in terms of the complex logistics and use of Agency resources involved. This burden becomes all the more compounded when the form must be revised, reprinted, and redistributed (worldwide). The FAA launched an on-line FAA Form 8500-8 application known as ``FAA MedXpress'' beginning in 2007. Since 2007, ``FAA MedXpress'' has evolved considerably, streamlining FAA medical certification into a much more efficient and seamless process, thereby rendering the paper process both redundant and obsolete. Discontinuing print of FAA Form 8500-8 will save considerable resources and improve the efficiency of the airman medical certification process. "
